But more than that, make us good, Lord, with a heartbeat that wants every person of every creed and color to know Your love, Your goodness, and Your worth. May they sense Your immense love through my simple gesture. (by Debbie McDaniel ) A Simple Prayer of Thanksįather, may I be one who notices a servant today and stops to genuinely thank them. Thank you for your truth that says, who the Son sets free is free indeed! We know that in you alone, true freedom is found. I confess that I am something of a goody-two-shoes myself, and in the past I’ve had little patience for all that sullen self-pity, pent-up anger, and nascent sexual pining. “The Patterns of Paper Monsters” presents an interesting challenge to grown-up, strait-laced readers who tend to avoid books about troubled youths. “He was staring at me with epic nostalgia, like my face was a paved-over rain forest,” Jacob says of Jim, an adult volunteer assigned to mentor him. But equally fun to read are the moments when Jacob finds himself feeling vulnerable-usually when someone else meets his coolness with a display of raw emotion. Rathbone writes Jacob some great bits of irreverent commentary: “Family day is when the disparate elements of our broken families collect here at the JDC in a veritable Who’s Who of the Braddock County welfare set,” he quips when his mother comes to visit. He finds Andrea “really pretty, like babysitter pretty.” A date with a previous girlfriend was like “rolling down the side of a hot grassy hill on a pretty good day.” And happiness? “It’s like trying to pee when you’re really high-sometimes it seems impossible but it’s not like I don’t know how.” It’s an appealingly understated teen-age love story, and Jacob’s offbeat descriptions are charming. The budding romance between Jacob and Andrea is believably stilted and messy it moves in fits and starts, with Jacob’s motives alternating between a deep need for companionship and the simple desire for sex. “I’m usually pretty good at sculpting conversations for personal effect kind of veering them toward some self-deprecating exchange that conveys how great and wounded or smart I am,” Jacob reflects, after an exchange with Andrea-a fellow inmate-renders him momentarily speechless. The best thing about Jacob is that he is remarkably self-aware: even as he’s feeling sorry for himself or slyly manipulating some well-meaning adult tasked with helping him, he is frank about what he is up to. He may be cut from the same cloth as Holden Caulfield, but he’s a good bit funnier and a lot less mopey than the angsty adolescent male narrators from many coming-of-age books that have followed “Catcher in the Rye.” Rathbone’s novel is divided into bite-sized episodes-some darkly humorous scenes from inside the detention center, others poignant memories-all unflinchingly described and analyzed by Jacob himself. Everything is sad and pointless? It’s a dire conclusion for such a young person to reach, but it’s not hard to see how he got to that point: after a childhood filled with poverty, drugs, and a series of abusive father figures, Jacob has landed in a juvenile detention center following a robbery attempt gone awry. Buy the Wave Plus, unless you really like the look of the dark titanium. Even though it's made of titanium, it's no lighter than the Wave Plus that costs far less and comes with 18 mini-tools, many of them the same as the Charge TTi's. It's packed with 19 useful tools and comes with that stellar Leatherman build quality and warranty. Leatherman Charge TTi for $190: This is a weak recommendation. Sometimes it's just nice to have a tool that doesn't try to look modern. But it's beautifully made, and I dig the boxy, straight-edged handles. At 10 ounces, it's on the heavier side as well. Victorinox Swiss Tool for $153: Yes, I did a double-take when I first saw the price tag too. If you don't need all the bells and whistles our top pick offers, you can probably make do with a less bulky gizmo that still has the basic, most-used tools, such as a knife, bottle opener, can opener, bit drivers, and pliers. Leatherman Skeletool CX for $90: This one is slightly smaller than the Wave Plus, but it's still a standard-sized multi-tool. There are a ton of other multi-tools out there, and brands like Leatherman and Victorinox have models upon models that make it confusing to figure out exactly what to get. There are countless stories of customers receiving whole replacement flip-out tools and blades for their decades-old multi-tools. It also includes a 25-year warranty, and the company will repair or replace parts if you ship your multi-tool to its facility in Portland, Oregon. Nowadays, Wave Plus offers practically the same package at a lower price. Once upon a time, Leatherman's Charge series offered its best multi-tools. There are 16 other tools, including a wood-and-metal file, a diamond-coated file, a saw, Phillips screwdriver bits, scissors, an 8-inch ruler, and a wire stripper, as well as a bottle and can opener. The 420HC steel employed has a high carbon content, so the edges won't stay sharp for long, but it's easy to sharpen 'em up again. The latter is good for cutting fibrous material such as rope. It has two stainless steel knives, one with a straight edge and the other serrated. Leatherman has many options to choose from, but the Wave Plus is easily my favorite. Tools can be flipped out and retracted forcefully but smoothly, and the finishing on each mini-tool is excellent. The company's build quality is fantastic. Leatherman has become shorthand for “multi-tool” for a good reason. Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day. com and our print magazine (if you'd like). But how many of them are actually well made? I spent months testing various models, putting them to work by assembling picture frames, slicing open packages, opening beer and wine bottles, and cutting apples. Now, there are multi-tools in all kinds of shapes and sizes from a staggering number of companies. Then Leatherman arrived with a folding pair of pliers to give Switzerland a run for its money. The Swiss Army Knife was the first multi-tool with global popularity. You might not even need to stand up, as long as you've got the right multi-tool handy. Is your chair wobbly because it's got a screw loose? Your child needs a toy freed from zip ties that make it as impenetrable as a bank vault? At a picnic with a bottle of wine? This is the first time the major Disney characters have regularly appeared on television in computer-animated form. They Might Be Giants also perform the song used at the end of every show, 'Hot Dog!', which echoes Mickey's first spoken words in the 1929 short The Karnival Kid. The show features two original songs performed by American alternative rock band They Might Be Giants, including the opening theme song, in which a variant of a Mickey Mouse Club chant ('Meeska Mooska Mickey Mouse!') is used to summon the Clubhouse. By calling 'Oh, Toodles!' Mickey summons him to pop up from where he is hiding and fly up to the screen so the viewer can pick which tool Mickey needs for the current situation. Once the tools have been shown to Mickey on the Mousekadoer screen, they are quickly downloaded to Toodles, a small, Mickey-head-shaped flying extension of the Mousekedoer. Once the problem of the episode has been explained, Mickey invites viewers to join him at the Mousekadoer, a giant Mickey-head-shaped computer whose main function is to distribute the day's Mouseketools, a collection of objects needed to solve the day's problem, to Mickey, one of them being a 'Mystery Mouskatool' represented by a question mark, which, when the words 'Mystery Mouskatool' are said, and the question mark change into the Mouseketool you get to use, another being a 'Mouseka-Think-About-It Tool' represented by a silhouette of Mickey's head with gears rotating, and the gang must think of what to use before telling the Tool 'Mouseka-Think-About-It-Tool, we pick the (object)'. The series uses 'Disney Junior's 'whole child' curriculum of cognitive, social and creative learning opportunities'. Disney says that each episode has the characters help children 'solve a specific age-appropriate problem utilizing basic math skills, such as identifying shapes and counting through ten'. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto, and a mechanical assistant 'Mouseketool' called Toodles, interact with the viewer to stimulate problem solving during each episode's story. Since its cancellation, it airs reruns on Disney Junior. The final episode aired on November 6, 2016. By default, the priority is ranked Low, but you may want to raise the priority if you have a big job you want to finish fast. Here you can tell the program how much of your system resources you want to let it to command. One section of the Advanced page, however, could be of use to a broader audience: Performance. Those options may sound confusing and obscure, but users who just want an easy backup fix need never delve into this arcana. Lest you thought the options already mentioned were not detailed or technical enough, the Advanced tab really lets you dig in, offering pre and post commands, splits for multiple backup targets, validation, comments, custom error handling, file-level security, and other things those who just want to protect their photos and word docs won't care about. On the Exclusions tab, you can add any specific filenames or wildcard character strings, such as *.exe, to exclude them from the backup. This tops Paragon Backup & Recovery, which is decidedly lacking in notification options. Differential saves just the changes made since the last full backup.Īcronis also gives you plenty of notification options: You can have one emailed to you for any backup action, including completion of a backup session or when insufficient disk space is detected. An example of the last could be "Create a full version after every 6 incremental versions." Incremental backups are a way of not reinventing the wheel, file-wise-they only save the changes made since the previous incremental backup. You can specify a backup scheme such as Single Version, Version chain, Incremental, Differential, or even a Custom scheme. More detailed options appear in more tabs of the Options page. For the ultimate in protection, you can tell it to back up whenever a file in the backup set is changed. For example, you can tell the program to run the backup whenever you log on or off your PC, or at startup or shutdown. To schedule regular backups, you tap the Options button, which offers daily, monthly, and weekly choices, along with some more interesting options. You can also just choose to initiate the backup at your leisure, by choosing Later. Once you've chosen your source and destination, a green button lets you back up right then or delay backup for up to 6 hours. An estimate of the space required by your selected backup helpfully appears at the bottom of the screen. If you choose files or folders, you see a folder tree with check boxes for selecting what you want backed up. You can change this to specified drives, partitions, files, or folders. What to Back Up and When By default, Acronis selects Entire PC as the source of your backup. Under this, the More Tools option opens a File Explorer folder of nine additional tools, including a System Report, DriveCleanser, and Try&Decide-a utility for temporarily installing software you're unsure about. The Tools icon takes you to Disk Cloning, Rescue-Media Creation, and more. Syncing, Tools, and Mobile backup come next. And the second still takes you to the archiving function, designed to free up your storage from old, unused data. The first icon on True Image's home screen still shows your basic backup source set and destination. For this year's version of True Image, the company has moved the menu items around a bit. It's a far cry from ShadowProtect's many-tabbed, outdated user interface. A left panel is populated by flat, line-drawing icons reminiscent of those in Windows 10's new Settings app, and in fact the interface works well with touch-screen PCs. Interface True Image's interface is simple, modern, and friendly. Paragon Backup & Recovery is not as persistent as this, only running processes as you use the software. After you install Acronis, quite a few processes will always be running on your system, even for features you're not using. Somehow, the program remembered my account even with a fresh reinstall on the same PC.
